Flamengo paid tribute this Saturday (23) to judge Mariana Francisco Ferreira, 34, who died at the beginning of the month after complications arising from an egg collection procedure for in vitro fertilization (IVF).
The tribute took place before the match between Flamengo and Palmeiras, at Maracanã, in the 17th round of the Brazilian Championship. During the pre-game protocol, a minute of silence was held in memory of the judge.
Born in Niterói, in the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro, Mariana was a Flamengo fan and worked as a judge in Sapiranga, in the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre, since 2023.
The image of the judge, identified as an “illustrious Flamengo fan”, was shown on the Maracanã screen. After the tribute, the referee authorized the start of the match. .
This was the second tribute paid to the magistrate in Rio de Janeiro club games. On the 10th, before the match between Grêmio Foot-Ball Porto Alegrense and Flamengo, at Arena do Grêmio, for the 15th round of the Brasileirão, a minute of silence was also held.
On the occasion, Mariana’s image was also shown on the stadium’s big screen. The initiative had the participation of both clubs and was authorized by the Brazilian Football Confederation.
The judge died on May 6, in Mogi das Cruzes, in Greater São Paulo. The case is investigated as a suspicious death by the São Paulo Civil Police.
According to information in the police report, the egg collection procedure was carried out on the morning of May 4, at the Invitro Assisted Reproduction clinic.
According to the judge’s mother’s report to the police, after returning home, Mariana began to feel severe pain and intense cold, and was taken back to the clinic, where she was found to have vaginal bleeding.
According to the record, she underwent a suture and was later taken to a hospital in Mogi das Cruzes, where she was admitted to the ICU.
On the night of the 5th, Mariana underwent surgery, but suffered two cardiorespiratory arrests the following morning. Despite attempts at resuscitation, she died on the morning of the 6th.
In a note released after the death, the Court of Justice of Rio Grande do Sul decreed three days of official mourning and expressed regret over the magistrate’s death.
The case is investigated by the 1st Police District of Mogi das Cruzes. The São Paulo Public Security Secretariat reported that tests were requested from the Legal Medical Institute and the Criminalistics Institute.
