Alerj (Legislative Assembly) reacted this Saturday (23) to the president’s statements (), in Rio.
The demonstration occurred after Lula stated, during a speech, that he was afraid that the choice of the state governor would go through the Legislative Assembly.
“When this process began, I said: ‘If the Assembly nominates, the same person will come’. If the Assembly had to nominate, a militia member would come.”
Alerj is chaired by the deputy ()political ally of the Bolsonaro family. The PL has the largest bench in the House, with 23 state deputies — the PT occupies five seats.
In a statement, the House stated that it “respects institutions and expects the same respect from all authorities in the country, including the President of the Republic.”
The Assembly also declared that “any attempt to generalize or criminalize the Rio de Janeiro Parliament and its representatives elected by the people of Rio de Janeiro is unacceptable.”
“Alerj is a democratic, legitimate institution and deserves respect”, he added.
This Sunday (24), Ruas published a video on social media to refute Lula and stated that the president “disrespected the people” of Rio de Janeiro.
“Lula came to Rio and once again disrespected our people, carrying out widespread attacks. Lula and his friend Eduardo Paes have no morals to teach lessons about combating organized crime,” said the deputy.
Lula also demanded that the acting governor of Rio, judge Ricardo Couto, act against militias and organized crime in the state.
“Do you know what these people expect from you in these months? I work to arrest all the thieves who governed this state and deputies who are part of an organized militia,” he said.
The declaration took place during the inauguration ceremony of the new facilities of the CDTS (Center for Technological Development in Health), from Fiocruz.
The interim governor took charge of the state after the resignation of (), who left the position to run for the Senate.
The actions of the Cláudio Castro (PL) administration, which began to publicly react to information about the audits. The former governor was also targeted.
President of the Rio Court of Justice, Couto arrived at the Guanabara Palace on March 24th. He remains in office by decision of the (Federal Supreme Court), which has not yet determined how the new buffer governor will be chosen, to complete his term of office by the end of this year.
The determination changed the provisions of the state Constitution, since on April 14 Alerj elected deputy Douglas Ruas as president of the Legislature, a position that is ahead of the president of the Court of Justice in the line of succession. Members of the PL claim that the scenario resembles a judicial intervention in the management of Rio de Janeiro.
In the note released after Lula’s speech, Alerj also stated that Rio faces “historic challenges in public security”, related to “the absence of effective national policies to combat arms trafficking, open borders to organized crime and the expansion of criminal factions throughout the country”.
According to the Assembly, “the moment demands institutional unity, balance and responsibility — and not statements that encourage political division or prejudge institutions.”
The House concluded by saying that it will continue working “to strengthen democracy, public security and the defense of the population of the State of Rio de Janeiro.”
