Europe’s main football leagues ended the season this weekend, with champions that were already defined and some relegations that no one expected. Arsenal, Barcelona, Inter, Bayern and PSG took the national titles. In Portugal, Porto took the championship from Sporting in the last stretch.
In the European top scorer, Harry Kane was relentless in the Bundesliga, with 36 goals and isolated leadership in the fight for the continent’s Golden Boot. Erling Haaland was the Premier League’s top scorer for the third year in four. Kylian Mbappé scored 24 goals for Real Madrid even with the club far from the Spanish title.
The drama of the season was due to two giants from London. West Ham and Tottenham reached the last round competing for the same place to avoid falling — West Ham will play in the Championship (the English second division) next year.
As a final chapter, on May 30th, Arsenal and PSG will face each other in the Champions League final, in Budapest. Arsenal, who have not reached the final of the competition since 2006, are trying to stop PSG from winning the European title in consecutive years. The last club to achieve this feat was Real Madrid, between 2016 and 2018.
ENGLAND
Arsenal were Premier League champions for the first time since 2004, ending a 22-year drought after Manchester City stumbled into second place.
The relegated clubs were Wolves and Burnley, along with West Ham, which had not fallen to the second division since 2012. Coventry City and Ipswich Town rose to the elite as the top two in the Championship.
Erling Haaland was the league’s top scorer for the third year in the last four, with 27 goals. Defender Gabriel was one of the most praised names of the season, and goalkeeper David Raya won the Golden Glove with 18 games without conceding a goal.
Manchester City won the League Cup by beating Arsenal and in the FA Cup they defeated Chelsea 1-0 at Wembley, with a goal from Antoine Semenyo. The achievements marked the end of the Pep Guardiola era at the club, which left with two trophies this season.
SPAIN
Barcelona were champions of La Liga with 94 points, 11 more than second-placed Real Madrid, who had an irregular season. Despite the club’s situation, Kylian Mbappé was the top scorer with 24 goals, defending the title won in the previous season. Young Lamine Yamal also shone for Barcelona until he suffered an injury at the end of the championship.
The relegated club was Real Oviedo and those promoted to the first division will be defined on May 31st.
In the Copa del Rey, Real Sociedad surprised by winning for the first time since 2020, beating Atlético de Madrid on penalties, 4-3, in the final in Seville.
ITALY
Inter Milan were Serie A champions before the end of the Italian season, with Napoli as runners-up. The club also won the national championship, beating Lazio 2-0 in the Coppa Italia final, at the Olympic Stadium in Rome.
Full-back Federico Dimarco was named the best player in the league. Lautaro Martínez won the best striker award and was the championship’s top scorer with 16 goals.
Hellas Verona and Pisa were relegated to Serie B, while Venezia was directly promoted — the other clubs that go to Seria A still depend on playoffs.
GERMANY
Bayern Munich were Bundesliga champions with 89 points, 16 ahead of second place Borussia Dortmund. The relegated clubs were Heidenheim and St. Pauli, while Schalke 04 and Hamburg SV were promoted.
Harry Kane was top scorer for the third consecutive year, the first player to do so in the first three seasons in the same league, with 36 goals.
In the final of the DFB-Pokal, the German cup, Kane scored three goals in the second half and Bayern beat Stuttgart 3-0, winning the German national cup for the first time in six years and securing both titles of the season.
The English striker, who scored 61 goals in 51 games this season, was also the only player to score at every stage of the competition.
FRANCE
PSG were Ligue 1 champions for the second year in a row, with Lens finishing runners-up. The top scorer was Esteban Lepaul, with 18 goals. Nantes and Metz were relegated and so far Troyes has gone up directly — the other two places will be defined after playoffs.
Despite losing Ligue 1, Lens capped a historic season by winning the Coupe de France for the first time in its 118-year history, beating Nice 3-1 at the Stade de France.
PORTUGAL
Porto were champions of the Primeira Liga with 88 points, interrupting Sporting’s two-time championship, which was second. The individual highlight was Colombian Luis Suárez, from Sporting, top scorer of the season with 28 goals and a new record for a Colombian in the Portuguese league.
AVS was relegated and Marítimo rose to the first division as champions of the second.
In one of the biggest surprises in recent Portuguese football, Torreense defeated Sporting 1-0 and won the Portuguese Cup for the first time in history. The title guaranteed the second division club an unprecedented place in the Europa League.
