President of the MT Assembly proposes a plebiscite to resolve a 22 thousand km² dispute with Pará

Conciliation hearing, reported by Flávio Dino, was rescheduled for June 10; parliamentarian says it’s a matter of ‘people, not land’

The president of the Legislative Assembly of Mato Grosso, deputy Max Russi (Podemos), defended the holding of a plebiscite to resolve the century-old territorial dispute between Mato Grosso and Pará. “I told Minister Dino that we can hold a plebiscite, let’s listen to the people, because at the end of the day what matters are the people, it’s not the inch of land, it’s not the production”, he stated, in an exclusive interview with Young Pan.

A The disputed area is approximately 22 thousand km² — equivalent in size to the state of Sergipe — and covers territories of six municipalities in Pará: Jacareacanga, Novo Progresso, Altamira, São Félix do Xingu, Cumaru do Norte and Santana do Araguaia. The region, known as Salto das Sete Quedas, has around 350,000 head of cattle and the Teles Pires Plant, considered the tenth largest in the country.

A Governor of Pará, Hana Ghassan Tuma, stated that she will not accept divisions in the state’s territory. Russi responded directly to the statement. “I saw this video of the governor, where she was worried about the land issue. We are not worried about the land issue, we are worried about the people, about welcoming those residents, because they don’t have assistance”, he countered.

The deputy accuses Pará of abandonment. “Total neglect of not bringing infrastructure, health, the minimum to that region. They are really left out,” he said. THE parliamentarian also stated that the Assembly has already had a hearing with minister Flávio Dino and is following the case “very strongly”.

The dispute originates from the definition of the border established in 1922. The new process was filed in 2023, reigniting the political and legal clash between the states. In 2020, the STF had unanimously decided in favor of Pará. If there is no agreement at the hearing, scheduled for June 10, the case will proceed to a new judicial analysis.
