A Danish “ghetto” that resisted its destruction

The Mjølnerparken housing estate in the Danish capital Copenhagen has been a construction site for years. Both a political and a literal one. Construction fences, construction machinery and construction workers dominate the scene around the apartment blocks in the trendy Nørrebro district. In 2018, the non-profit housing complex was the backdrop for then-head of government Lars Løkke Rasmussen, who presented his “ghetto plan” there. This was intended to take tough action against so-called “parallel societies”; Løkkes said that a tool had finally been found against the failed integration of immigrants.
