US Secretary of Defense: Stability in the Pacific is key, China must not gain the upper hand

US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth assures that the US wants a stable balance of power in the Pacific. He warns against Chinese hegemony and calls for more arming of the allies.

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said in his speech at the Shangri-La Dialogue security summit in Singapore on Saturday that the United States is seeking a stable balance in the Pacific. According to him, neither China nor any other country should have the opportunity to gain indisputable superiority in the region. TASR informs about it according to the Reuters and AFP agencies.

“What we are striving for is a stable balance that will suit both the Americans and our allies – a favorable but permanent balance of power in which no state, not even China, will be able to gain hegemony and threaten the security or prosperity of our state and our allies,” emphasized the US Secretary of Defense.

They do not seek confrontation

Throughout the Pacific region, according to Hegseth, there is a “legitimate concern” about China’s armaments and the expansion of its military activities in the region and beyond. He emphasized that Washington’s goal “is not an unnecessary confrontation in the region.”

He urged Asian allies to increase military spending to counter China’s rising power and prevent its dominance. According to him, the Allies need stability, not escalation. However, according to him, relations with Beijing are better than in previous years and communication between the armed forces of both countries has intensified.

Hegseth also commented on the war against Iran in Singapore. He emphasized that the US is ready to resume attacks. “Our ability to resume operations if necessary is that we are more than prepared and our stockpiles are more than adequate,” he declared.
