France calls for an emergency UN meeting after the advance of Israeli forces in Lebanon

France is calling for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council after the Israeli army seized the strategic Beaufort castle in southern Lebanon.

France called for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council after Israeli troops occupied the strategic Beaufort castle in southern Lebanon. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot announced this on Sunday, TASR writes, according to an AFP report.

“I asked for an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council, because while we recognize Israel’s right, as well as all countries’ right to self-defense, nothing can justify the continuation of Israeli military operations in Lebanon and the deepening occupation of Lebanese territory,” Barrot told BFMTV television.

The Israeli army is advancing in Lebanon

The French foreign minister announced the move after the Israeli army announced on Sunday that its troops were advancing in Lebanon as part of an expanded ground operation. The aim is to strengthen the military position in the south of this country, where Israel is fighting the Iran-backed Hezbollah movement.

During the operation launched in recent days, Israeli forces occupied the strategic Beaufort Castle in southern Lebanon and advanced into the Wadi al-Saluki stream area, “strengthening operational control in southern Lebanon and removing the direct threat to (the area of) the Finger of Galilee and Metula,” according to an army statement. It is the northernmost part of Israel and the border village there.
