US deputies support rule that restricts Trump’s powers against Iran

The U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday backed a Democratic-led resolution aimed at halting the war against Iran until hostilities are authorized by Congress, reflecting growing congressional concern about war, even among President Donald Trump’s Republicans.

The voting score was 215 to 208, as four Republicans voted with the Democrats in favor of the war powers resolution.

Voting is largely symbolic. Any resolution would also have to pass the Senate to take effect and obtain two-thirds majorities in both chambers to overcome an almost certain veto by Trump.

However, this comes after three previous war powers resolutions failed in the House by ever-shrinking margins. And the Senate advanced a separate but similar resolution last month in a procedural vote, after seven previous attempts failed.
