Xi will meet Kim Jong-un in North Korea on June 8-9

Chinese President Xi Jinping will visit North Korea between June 8 and 9, Chinese state news agency Xinhua reported this Friday (4).

Xi will meet with Kim Jong-un at the invitation of the North American leader, as part of a state visit, Xinhua said. North Korean news agency KCNA also confirmed the trip.

The Chinese leader’s last state visit to Pyongyang took place in 2019. This will also be Xi Jinping’s first international trip in 2026.

The announcement comes after separate summits that Xi Jinping hosted in Beijing for US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in May.

China has sought to keep North Korea under Beijing’s orbit, after the Covid-19 pandemic reduced trade between the country and Kim Jong-un deepened relations with Russia, especially by sending troops and weapons to support Moscow in the War against Ukraine.

North Korea is the only country in the world to have a mutual defense treaty with China.
