One hundred coins from 41 countries were selected to compete for Coin of the Year (COTY) 2026, one of the most prestigious awards in world numismatics. Considered by many the “Oscar of numismatics”, the award brings together some of the most innovative pieces launched in the last year and serves as a showcase for trends in design, technology and monetary production on a global scale.
The 2026 edition received almost 600 nominations for coins issued in 2025. After an initial evaluation carried out by international experts, the 100 finalists were chosen, distributed across ten categories, including Best Commemorative Coin, Best Historical Coin, Best Gold Coin, Best Silver Coin, Best Circulating Coin, Most Artistic Coin and Most Innovative Coin.
In addition to recognizing the artistic and technical excellence of monetary issues, the list of finalists offers a snapshot of current trends in the sector. Among the most recurring themes are the memory of conflicts and wars, notable historical events and tributes to figures of national and international relevance.

Also noteworthy is the growing investment by mints in different formats, technological resources and visual experiences aimed at attracting new collectors.
One of the highlights of this edition is a coin issued by Niue in the shape of a paper airplane, highlighted by the organizers as one of the most creative examples among the competing pieces.
The project demonstrates how innovation has gained ground in a segment traditionally associated with conventional circular shapes.

The strong competition observed in the gold and innovation categories reinforces another market trend: the search for increasingly sophisticated issues, capable of combining artistic value, thematic appeal and advanced minting techniques.
In recent years, colored coins, special formats and different finishes have started to play a prominent role in the main international awards.
Although Brazil is not represented among the finalists in this edition, COTY is closely followed by collectors, researchers and professionals in the sector, as it often anticipates trends subsequently adopted by various mints around the world.

The results will be announced on August 27, 2026, during the World’s Fair of Money, the main numismatic convention in the United States, held annually by the American Numismatic Association, in the city of Pittsburgh.
Created in 1984, Coin of the Year has become one of the most important international references for the numismatic industry, rewarding coins that stand out for their innovation, artistic beauty, historical relevance and production excellence.
