State of São Paulo records first quarter in history without bank robberies

Crime reached a peak of 151 cases in the same period in 2006

The state of São Paulo closed the first four months of 2026 without registering any bank robberies. It is the first time that the four-month period ends without the sport occurring since 2001, the beginning of the historical series.

According to data from the Public Security Secretariat (SSP-SP), the type of robbery has fallen annually since 2006, when the state recorded 151 incidents in the first four months. In 2018, there were 16; in 2024 and 2025, just one per year. In 2026, none.

The drop follows the movement of other types of theft. In the same period, the state recorded the lowest levels in the series in vehicle thefts, 5,883 occurrences, and cargo thefts, 867all new brands in 26 years of registrations.

The strategy for this reduction combines overt patrolling by the Military Police in areas with the highest criminal incidence and investigations by the Civil Police aimed at dismantling gangs.

“The consistent reduction in crime rates in São Paulo is a direct result of firm, data-driven action,” stated the Secretary of Public Security, Osvaldo Nico Gonçalves.
