Why didn’t Austria prove itself in 1930? Well, it’s easy to explain why, alongside Romania, Yugoslavia, France and Belgium, Austria, then one of Europe’s leading football countries, didn’t make its way to Uruguay and the first World Cup in 1930. There simply wasn’t enough money to embark on the three-week ship voyage with FIFA President Jules Rimet and the trophy that would later be named after him.
