Militants met this Monday (8) at the “4th National Meeting of the Workers’ Party Nucleus” and launched an open letter. The document is a nod to neo-Pentecostal Christians and brings considerations about the PT government program, which is seeking re-election in 2026.
The letter deals with a variety of topics, such as violence against women, the actions of the PT administration and the defense of democracy. There is, however, no mention of gender issues, population rights and the decriminalization of abortion, points that tend to generate disagreements between evangelicals and the left.
“We reject any attempt to transform religion into an instrument of political manipulation, and we denounce those who use the Gospel as a business,” says the letter, which contains excerpts from the biblical books of Isaiah, James, Matthew, Ephesians and Peter.
The letter also cites concerns about fake news and hate speech. “Religion should not be used to divide the Brazilian people, but to promote hope, solidarity and commitment to the common good.”
He also argues that evangelicals do not form a single political bloc, but states that he does not intend to “speak for all denominations”. The Christian faith is also associated with progressive agendas, such as protection of the vulnerable and social justice.
Neo-Pentecostal PT supporters claim that themes like these “are part of the message of Jesus and the best evangelical tradition”.
The evangelical segment has been one of the most challenging for the PT in all of the last presidential elections. In polls of voting intentions, the advantage of Bolsonarism in this field is constant.
PT president, Edinho Silva, spoke at the event, which was called “Mishpat: Faith, Justice, Democracy and Elections 2026”. The word Mishpat can be read as justice in Hebrew.
Edinho praised Lula. “The president who most effectively respected the evangelical community was President Lula. No president has done as much to recognize the evangelical community as the president,” he said.
At the same meeting, First Lady da Silva addressed the pastor, member of the Assembly of God Vitória em Cristo and Bolsonarist electoral leader.
“I don’t call him either [Malafaia] of shepherd. He had the nerve to go on social media and say that I was talking to insignificant women. , because every woman is important to me”, he said.
