Israeli soldiers shot the attacker from Lebanon. The shootout took place in the mountainous border area

Israeli soldiers shot dead a gunman who infiltrated from Lebanon behind the border fence. However, the Upper Galilee incident revealed a disturbing failure of the military.

The AFP agency reported on the incident in which Israeli soldiers shot an armed assailant who had penetrated from Lebanon into Israel’s territory. According to her, the shootout took place in a mountainous area on the border between the two countries.

  • Israeli soldiers shot and killed an armed attacker who entered Israel from Lebanon.
  • The shootout took place in the mountainous border area, Israeli soldiers did not suffer any injuries.
  • The gunman got behind the border fence, exposing the army’s security failure.
  • The incident strengthened the propaganda position of the Hezbollah movement in the conflict with Israel.
  • The Israeli army is investigating the incident and checking the possibility of long-term hiding of the attacker.

The Israeli army (IDF) said in a statement that the gunman opened fire on the soldiers and they returned fire. The armed man, whom the army identified as a terrorist, was subsequently killed. At the same time, the IDF confirmed that there were no dead or injured among the army members.

Crossing the border

The unnamed army sources cited by The Jerusalem Post specified that the man was already shooting from Israeli territory, but only moved away from the border fence. At the same time, the newspaper pointed out that the very fact that the gunman was able to get behind the fence at a time when the IDF declares full control over southern Lebanon is seen as a serious failure of the Israeli army.

According to The Jerusalem Post, the incident also has a significant propaganda dimension in favor of the pro-Iranian militant movement Hezbollah, which has been active in southern Lebanon for a long time and has sporadic armed confrontations with Israel.

Doubts about safety

The shooting took place in the Upper Galilee area in the north of Israel, in the immediate vicinity of the Lebanese border. The Jerusalem Post pointed out that similar incidents can undermine the sense of security of the residents of the north of the country. After the attack, the army ordered some civilians near the scene of the firefight to remain in their homes until the situation was checked.

The IDF command for the northern sector began to investigate the circumstances of the incident and sent reconnaissance units to the field. One of the military sources indicated that the army is also considering a version according to which it could be a gunman who had been hiding underground or in a building in the area for a long time and only now decided to come out of hiding.
