Temperatures will reach 40 degrees in several regions of the country in the coming days. Know how to protect yourself.

All districts of mainland Portugal and the archipelagos of Madeira and the Azores are in very high risk exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UV), according to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA).

Mainland Portugal will record high temperatures until Saturday with maximum temperature values ​​varying between 30 and 37 degrees Celsiuswhich may vary between 38 and 40 degrees in some places in Alentejo, Ribatejo and the Douro river valley.

In the western coastal strip, the highest maximum temperature values ​​should be recorded this Friday, and on the south coast of the Algarve, maximum temperature values ​​will be slightly below 30 degrees.

With regard to maximum temperature, values ​​of 20 degrees (tropical nights), or slightly higher, are predicted in many places.

How to protect yourself

According to IPMA, the very high risk of exposure to UV radiation will be maintained on the mainland and archipelagos of Madeira and Azores at least until Monday.

The ultraviolet radiation scale has five levels, between extreme and low risk. For regions at extreme risk, the institute recommends that avoid sun exposure whenever possible.

With regard to regions with very high risk, IPMA advises the use of sunglasses with a UV filter, hat, t-shirt, umbrella, sunscreen and avoiding exposing children to the sun. For high-risk regions, it is recommended to use sunglasses with a UV filter, a hat, a t-shirt and sunscreen.
