The name of President Donald Trump began to be removed from the facade of the Kennedy Center on Saturday morning, the 13th. The removal of the prefix “The Donald J. Trump and” in golden letters above “The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts”, added in December last year, is accompanied by a crowd shouting “take it away” and also by applause.
In late May, a court ruling found that the Arts Center board exceeded legal authority by “unilaterally renaming” the space in honor of President Trump.
The deadline for removing any references to the president from the Kennedy Center ended on Friday, the 12th. However, the center’s administration asked for an extension of the deadline until noon this Saturday due to the storms that hit the Washington region.
But other references to the Republican, such as on the institution’s website and when sending institutional emails, had already been removed.
A statement from the Kennedy Center general counsel’s office to staff Thursday indicated that email signatures, letterhead and other documents should reflect the center’s name as “The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts” or “Kennedy Center.”
Since the beginning of this term, in January 2025, Trump has renamed institutions and spaces with his own name. In December last year, in addition to the Kennedy Center, the US Institute of Peace was renamed the Donald J. Trump Institute of Peace.
In Palm Beach, a stretch of road connecting the airport to Trump’s estate was recently renamed Donald J. Trump Boulevard. In late March, the US Treasury Department announced that it would include the Republican’s signature on local currency notes.
Starting July 1, Palm Beach International Airport, one of the busiest in Florida, will be renamed President Donald J. Trump International Airport. (WITH INTERNATIONAL AGENCIES)
