Iran has warned that it could end the negotiations it maintains with the United States after the attack launched this Sunday by Israel against considered one of Hezbollah’s main strongholds.
The warning was made by Mohamed Baqer Qalifab, speaker of the Iranian Parliament and head of Tehran’s negotiating team, who questioned Washington’s role amid rising tension in the region.
According to the latest report released by the official Lebanese agency NNA, the bombing left at least three people dead and 15 injured. The attack was carried out with at least four laser-guided missiles that hit an apartment building located in Ghobeiri, within the Dahiya area, in the south of the Lebanese capital.
The explosion also caused significant material damage to nearby buildings and businesses. For its part, Israel maintains that it acted in response to previous attacks launched by Hezbollah against Israeli territory.
For Iran, the attack is especially serious because it occurred in Dahiya, a densely populated area considered the main center of operations for Hezbollah, Tehran’s strategic ally in Lebanon.
The offensive also coincides with a particularly delicate moment in the talks between Iran and the United States. US President Donald Trump had announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding aimed at immediately reopening the Strait of Hormuz and beginning a 60-day period of deeper negotiations on the Iranian nuclear program and other pending issues, within a context of cessation of hostilities.
Attacks in Lebanon collide with the search for peace
However, Qalifab assured that what happened in Beirut calls into question Washington’s ability or will. to fulfill their commitments. “The attack by the Zionists demonstrates once again that the United States either does not have the will to fulfill its commitments or does not have the capacity to do so,” the Iranian leader said in a message posted on social networks.
“By giving the green light to the regime (Israel), it is impossible for them to obtain concessions. The ‘good cop’ and ‘bad cop’ game is out of fashion. If they do not have the will or the ability to fulfill their commitments, it is not possible to continue down this path,” he added.
Another official reaction came from the joint command center of the Iranian Army, the Khatam al Anbiya headquarters. His spokesman, Sardar Asadi, assured that “crimes against the southern suburbs will not go unpunished.”
The statements further raise regional tension, especially after a similar attack last weekend led to an Iranian response for several days against Israeli territory and US military positions in the Persian Gulf.
