A common seal has caught the attention of those who frequent the Ria Formosa, in the Algarve, after being spotted in recent days in one of the best-known areas of the Algarve coast. The animal has some injuries, but continues to move along the Portuguese coast, on a journey that began far from Portugal.
According to , the marine mammal has been monitored by authorities from the North Sea and has already been observed in different points along the national coast over the last few weeks.
Passage through various points along the coast
Before arriving in the Algarve, the seal was seen in early June in Berlenga. Days later, new sightings emerged in the Ericeira area, confirming the animal’s progression south.
According to the same source, the presence of the seal has aroused curiosity wherever it goes, mainly because it is an unusual route for a specimen of this species. Despite the visible injuries, there was no evidence that his health condition had significantly worsened during the displacement.
Rest in the Ria Formosa
In the Algarve region, the animal was observed resting on a maritime signal buoy, an image that quickly caught the attention of those sailing or who were nearby.
Correio da Manhã says that the Institute for Nature and Forest Conservation has been monitoring developments in the case. Even so, the agency considers that there is no need to rescue the seal at this stage.
Follow-up without intervention
The authorities’ option, for now, is to monitor the animal’s path and monitor its physical condition. The fact that it continues to move along the coast is one of the elements considered when assessing the situation.
