The return of water to the natural pools of the Sítio das Fontes Municipal Park, in the municipality of Lagoa, is bringing life back to one of the best-known spaces in that area of the Algarve. After several years affected by drought, the place once again presented conditions that allow the use of natural bathing areas, attracting residents and visitors looking for an outdoor refuge during the warmer months.
According to , the phenomenon is directly linked to the recovery of water levels in the Querença-Silves Aquifer, considered the largest underground reserve of fresh water in the Algarve region. The replenishment of reserves occurred after more significant periods of precipitation, allowing an increase in the flow of the springs that feed the park.
Where does the water that fills swimming pools come from?
The explanation for this reappearance lies in the route that water takes from the interior of the region to the coastal areas. José Vieira, from the Environment Division, explained in a video released by the Lagoa Chamber that “the water that falls on the mountains flows to the south and, as soon as it reaches these limestone areas, this large karst massif begins to infiltrate and also feed the water table”.
As this water infiltrates and travels through the underground system, it ends up appearing in the springs in Sítio das Fontes. The increase in aquifer recharge could even lead to the flooding of some areas of the park, a phenomenon that contributes to the filling of the well-known natural pools.
A sought-after space beyond diving
With an area of around 18 hectares, the park is not just about bathing areas. The space includes water lines, old agricultural areas and various routes used throughout the year by visitors and school groups interested in learning about the municipality’s natural and historical heritage.
One of the most frequented areas continues to be the area close to the old tide mill. According to NiT, visitors will find support infrastructure there such as toilets, barbecue areas and a children’s playground, which allows them to spend several hours there without needing to leave the premises.
Return of a scenario that the drought had changed
In recent years, the lack of rain has significantly reduced the presence of water in this natural space. The recovery now observed represents a visible change in the landscape and returns one of the most characteristic images of the park.
The publication states that natural pools can now be used by inhabitants of the region and tourists, in a scenario that directly results from the recovery of underground water resources in the Algarve. The return of water once again transforms Sítio das Fontes into one of the reference places for those looking for contact with nature without the cost of access.
