The Oceanian country has exceeded its quota for China and Australian products will be penalized from Saturday (June 20)
The reported this Friday (June 19, 2026) that it will apply an additional tariff of 55% on beef imports from Australia from Saturday (June 20). The Oceanian country exceeded its import quota of 205 thousand tons established by the Chinese government in .
Australia becomes the first country affected by the Chinese tariff. Brazil should also suffer the consequences of the measure, possibly in the middle of the 2nd semester. In May, China’s Ministry of Commerce reported that Brazilian exporters had already filled half of their quota free of the 55% additional fee.
The Brazilian quota defined by the Chinese government is 1.1 million tons – 5 times higher than the Australian quota, but 35% lower than what was sold by Brazil to China last year (1.7 million tons).
As shown by the Poder360Brazilian exporters are about to escape the new tariff and, therefore, the quota must be met well before the end of this year.
In the first 4 months of 2026, beef exports to China increased by 20.4% compared to the same period last year. This rush is motivated by the lack of quota regulation by the Brazilian government, which caused Brazilian exporters to demand to ship their production to China as quickly as possible.
China implemented this measure to strengthen local livestock farming. According to the Chinese government, this system of quotas and additional tariffs of 55% will be valid for 3 years.
