The President of the United States, Donald Trump, stated this Saturday afternoon (20) that there will be no “tolls” charged in the Strait of Hormuz, unless the charge “is imposed by the United States”.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said that if a final agreement with Iran is not reached, his government may charge fees “as a form of cost reimbursement.”
Services provided
The North American leader also described the United States as the “guardian angel” of Middle Eastern countries and said that any charge would aim to “reimburse past, present and future costs”, justifying the measure as payment for “services provided” by the US in the region.
On Friday, Iran said it will not charge fees to ships in the Strait of Hormuz for the next 60 days. Five days ago, however, Tehran announced that, after this deadline – the period during which the agreement with the USA is in force -, it intends to institute a “service fee” for vessels that cross the maritime route.
