US President Donald Trump once again criticized Italy for not getting involved in the war against Iran. “After spending trillions of dollars on the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), Italy and its Prime Minister did not even consider involvement with the Islamic Republic of Iran and its nuclear threat”, he wrote, in a post on the social network Truth Social this Sunday (21).
“For decades, we defended them, but when tested, they weren’t there to defend us and the rest of the world. Not good!”
Exchange of barbs
This happens amid exchanges of barbs with the Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni. Last week, the Republican insinuated that the conservative had “begged” for a photo next to him at the G7 summit and that she had agreed to the record “out of pity”, statements denied by Meloni as “completely invented”.
Diplomatic uneasiness led to the cancellation of Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani’s trip to the United States.
On Saturday, Trump hit back at his Italian ally by claiming that the prime minister’s objective was to “increase her declining popularity” and criticized Italy’s lack of aid in the Middle East, despite the “hundreds of billions of dollars” spent by the US per year with NATO.
