UK Prime Minister resigns

Keir Starmer announced that he will resign as Prime Minister after days of pressure from Labor MPs, including British Government ministers, following Andy Burnham’s return to Westminster. The announcement was made by himself, outside number 10 Downing Street.

Starmer said he recognized he was not in the best position to lead the Labor Party at the next election. He added that he had asked the governing body of the Labor Party to establish a timetable for his replacement, with candidacies for open on July 9th and close on July 16th.

He stated that, should there be a dispute, the new leader will be in office before Parliament returns in September, and that he will do “everything in his power” to ensure a “orderly” transition of power.

According to , the leader of the Labor Party stated that he will remain prime minister until the leadership contest is concluded.

In his speech, he also highlighted the difficulties faced on the path to electoral victory. “Six years ago I inherited a politically, financially and morally bankrupt Labor Party”, he highlighted, adding that he had heard repeatedly that the party was finished and condemned to be left behind in history.

In recent days, the possibility of Keir Starmer’s departure has begun to gain momentum. Speculation intensified just two days after the Prime Minister assured that he did not intend to leave office and that he was willing to fight for leadership of the Labor Party and the Government.

According to , several British media outlets, citing Starmer’s ministers, advisors and family members, said on Sunday that the Prime Minister considered he no longer had the political conditions to resist the growing internal opposition.

Starmer resigns after months of pressure on his leadership. His position was first threatened in February, when Anas SarwarLabor leader in Scotland, demanded his resignation. At the time, however, the Government and the party leadership united around the Prime Minister and expressed support for him.
