Understand the impasse in the Roraima election
Despite having received 160,004 votes, equivalent to 60.87%, Arthur’s candidacy is sub judice because the STF minister, Flávio Dino, revoked a decision by the Regional Electoral Court of Roraima that changed the rules of disqualification so that candidates could abdicate their public positions within 24 hours after the announcement of the date of the supplementary election.
The Supreme Court minister understood that only candidates who had respected the original deadline for disqualification provided for in the rules of the Superior Electoral Court, which is six months before the election, could run for office.
In the decision, Dino argued that the non-compliance deadlines are not a mere formality and that the rules aim to ensure the equality and legitimacy of the electoral dispute. The former mayor’s campaign filed an appeal against both the STF’s decision and the Superior Electoral Court, claiming to have respected the standard set by the regional court.
In the appeal, the defense maintains that the supplementary election in Roraima was only scheduled in May of this year and held in June, which made it impossible for any candidate who held public office to contest it.
With the imbroglio, despite the victory at the polls, the PL candidate will only be able to take over if he receives a favorable decision at the polls. two cuts who analyze the resource.
Pending the decision, the state of Roraima will be governed by the president of the Legislative Assembly of Roraima, deputy Soldado Sampaio (Republicans), who also contested the election and finished in second place, with 93,897 votes, totaling 35.72%.
