US lifts sanctions on Iranian oil amid peace talks

O United States Treasury Department announced, this Monday (22)which will temporarily suspend sanctions against Iran to allow the Islamic Republic to produce, sell and supply crude oil and derivatives until August 21.

Negotiators from the United States and Iran on the second day of negotiations in search of a definitive end to the war between the two countriesafter a turbulent start due to aggressive statements by US President Donald Trump against the Iranian regime.

All transactions that were previously prohibited and that referred to the production, sale and transportation of crude oil of Iranian origin “are authorized until 12:01 am Eastern Daylight Time, August 21, 2026“, according to a license published by the Treasury Department.

“The tireless mediation of Pakistan and Qatar has allowed important advances to be made put an end to the Lebanese war“, said Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

“Restrictions on oil and petrochemical exports were lifted, the blockade was lifted, some frozen assets were unlocked, and an important reconstruction and development plan for Iran was put in place.”

At around 2:05 pm GMT (11:05 am in Brasília), Brent oil futures contracts fell 3.3%, to $77.91 a barrel.

Last week, Tehran and Washington signed a memorandum of understanding which lays the groundwork for a 60-day round of negotiations, after nearly 40 days of war followed by weeks of an inconclusive and frequently broken ceasefire.
