Smart #2: A first design insight in Rome

At the end of April, the Auto China trade fair in Beijing was very busy; the Smart Concept #2 attracted a lot of visitors. Behind this is the rebirth of the original concept from 1998, the fundamental interest seems to be there. It is understandable that the manufacturer, a 50-50 joint venture between Mercedes and Geely since 2020, moved the first insight into the design of the tiny electric car to Rome, as the eternal is considered the smart capital. Nowhere else have so many two-seater Smarts been sold, and they still shape the cityscape to this day. Of the 2.2 million Fortwos sold between 1998 and 2024 – most recently in cooperation with Renault (Twingo) – around 600,000 went to Italy, a third of which ended up in Rome.
