A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck this Wednesday afternoon near the north-central coast of Venezuela, as reported by the United States Geological Survey. The epicenter has been located in the region of Morón, a port and industrial city in the state of Carabobo, but the locations and magnitudes are preliminary and are being reviewed. The tremor has reached the , about 170 kilometers away, and several witnesses have reported a strong earthquake and houses shaking.

Residents rushed to evacuate as the quake shook buildings. A witness told Reuters that cracks formed along the facade of his building. The videos that have emerged show at least one building collapsing and several severely affected.

The United States Tsunami Warning System issued a tsunami threat for Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands following the earthquake.
