Itamaraty released an official statement this Wednesday reacting to the initiative of Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ), Lula’s opponent in the elections, to sign up to speak at a hearing on the 301 investigation in the United States and spoke of “traitors to the country”.
Flávio signed up to speak at the public hearing that will be held by the Donald Trump administration before the final decision by the Americans on the possible application of a new 25% tariff on Brazilian products. The Brazilian government will not send a representative to speak.
“The traitors to the Fatherland will not be able to rewrite history. Brazil knows that the tariff has its origins in an attempt at external interference in Brazilian justice”, says Itamaraty in a note released early this Wednesday evening on social media.

“Section 301 public hearings in the United States are a space for the private sector and civil society to act. Other important trading partners of the United States, such as China and the European Union, do not send representatives to public hearings either,” the note continued.
Itamaraty also said that the Brazilian government has been “actively” participating in this investigation through “direct channels of dialogue between governments” since the beginning of the investigation, in July 2025.
“He presented two written defenses demonstrating that Brazilian policies do not harm trade with the United States and held a government consultation meeting with the USA, in Washington, with a high-level delegation”, the note continues.
The Itamaraty concludes by stating that “the traitors to the country owe Brazil an apology for the tariffs and the losses caused to thousands of Brazilians”.
The application of tariffs by the Donald Trump government to Brazilian products became ammunition for attacks by the Lula and Flávio campaigns. On the one hand, PT members attribute the application of sanctions to the Bolsonaro family’s actions with American authorities. The nickname “Tariflávio” began to be disseminated by Lula’s allies since the announcement of the new sanctions.
Flávio and his allies, in turn, use tariffs to show influence with the Americans and to criticize the government’s actions internationally.
