The death of Siresp, the dog that for years accompanied the daily lives of the Carcavelos and São Domingos de Rana Firefighters, had a profound impact on the corporation and the local community. Known as the “barracks mascot”, the animal was remembered as a constant presence, close to the operatives and those who passed through the space.
According to the publication made by the firefighters themselves, the news was communicated with “deep regret”, in a message where the group described the animal as a “faithful friend” and a “true comrade”.
The farewell took place when Siresp was heading to the Restelo Veterinary Hospital, on what ended up being his last trip. The corporation explained that the moment was experienced with great emotional weight, after several years of daily coexistence.
Decision made after medical evaluation
Euthanasia was decided after a detailed clinical evaluation, carried out by the veterinarian who accompanied the animal. His health condition had deteriorated irreversibly. The firefighters explained that, given this scenario, the priority was to avoid suffering. “As our primary mission is to alleviate suffering, the difficult decision was made to let him rest in peace,” they wrote.
Over the years, Siresp became a familiar figure within the barracks. Its presence went beyond the idea of a simple companion animal, assuming a symbolic and affective role among the operational staff. The corporation writes that the dog “brought immense joy, loyalty and comfort” not only to firefighters, but also to citizens who visited the fire station. The connection built ended up transforming Siresp into an element recognized by everyone.
Name that became linked to the barracks
The choice of name did not go unnoticed. Siresp quickly became an internal reference and a kind of identity parallel to the corporation’s routine, accompanying formations, moments of pause and the daily environment of the parade. The same source states that the absence of the animal will now be felt in a particular way in that space. “Your presence at the parade will be greatly missed”, can be read in the published tribute.
In addition to the repercussions within the barracks, Siresp’s death also generated diverse reactions from the community, which over the years became accustomed to his presence and proximity. The firefighters also took the opportunity to thank the various messages received, as well as the affection shown over time. The relationship between Siresp and visitors ended up creating a connection that went beyond the barracks walls.
