The Serbian president confirmed friendship with Russia and China, but promises to fulfill his obligations towards the EU

At an event in Belgrade, the Serbian president assured that Serbia will remain on the European path, but will not turn its back on Russia or China. At the same time, he allowed the acceleration of reforms for joining the Union.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić told a rally of his supporters in Belgrade on Saturday night that his country would not give up its friendship with Russia and China, but would also fulfill the commitments it made as part of its bid for EU membership. TASR writes about it according to the TASS agency.

  • Serbian President Vučić emphasized friendship with Russia and China.
  • According to him, Serbia also cares about the path to the European Union.
  • Vučić announced that he will soon step down as president.
  • He plans to help his party win future elections.

“We are following the European path. But we will not spoil our friendly relations, for example with China or Russia. We will not leave our friends in trouble. We value these friendly ties,” he said. “When it comes to accelerating our progress on the European path, we will fulfill our commitments,” he added.

He can continue his career

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić announced on Saturday that he will step down within a few weeks. His second term will expire in May next year. The Serbian constitution allows the president to serve only two terms, so he could continue his political career as prime minister.

According to Reuters, the Serbian president said he would help his ruling Serbian Progressive Party win the next election. However, he did not set their date. The regular date for parliamentary and presidential elections is 2027, but Vučič recently indicated that he could announce them earlier.

The country is facing a wave of civil protests after the tragedy in Novi Sad, where 16 people died in early November 2024 when a concrete shelter at a renovated railway station collapsed. Protesters, the opposition and human rights organizations say it was a general failure of the government and the result of corruption.
