Pope Leo XIV expresses solidarity with Venezuela after earthquakes with 1,430 dead

O Pope Leo XIV expressed its solidarity, this Sunday (28), to the Venezuelans hit by the earthquakes that left in the country and thanked the rescue teams working to help millions of affected people.

“I wish to express my closeness to the Venezuelan brothers and sisters affected by the recent earthquakes, which caused countless victims and injuries, as well as immense material damage,” the pope said in a message in Spanish after the Angelus prayer.

The supreme pontiff also prayed for the “eternal rest of those who died” in the earthquakes and conveyed his “spiritual closeness” to their families and those affected by this “tragedy”.

“I also express my gratitude and encouragement to all those who work generously in search and relief efforts,” he said.

The double earthquake that shook Venezuela has left, to date, 1,430 dead, 50,000 missingaccording to the UN, and millions of affected.

The coastal state of La Guaira, neighboring Caracas, was the hardest hit by the two earthquakes, of magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5, which shook the country just a few seconds apart on Wednesday (24), at 6:04 pm (Caracas time).
