The 2026 presidential campaign already has a date for the first confrontation between the candidates. Band confirmed that it will hold, on August 16, the first debate between competitors for Palácio do Planalto, maintaining the tradition of opening the debate calendar for Brazilian elections.
The meeting will take place at 8pm, exactly one week after the debate between candidates for state governments and the Federal District, scheduled for August 9th. The two dates were announced by the broadcaster this Tuesday (30), along with the rules that will guide the programs.
The definition of the calendar takes place a few days after the start of the party conventions, a period in which the parties make their candidates official. The debate will also be held in the first weeks of the electoral campaign, a phase in which presidential candidates usually concentrate their efforts on expanding voter knowledge and consolidating their narratives before the start of free electoral propaganda.

The program will be led by journalists Eduardo Oinegue and Adriana Araújo, presenters of Jornal da Band. The format will combine blocks of questions asked by the brokers with moments of direct confrontation between the candidates.
In the thematic rounds, journalists will present questions about government proposals, and each candidate will have two minutes to respond, following an order defined by draw. In another block, the presidential candidates themselves will ask each other questions. In this case, each interaction will have one minute for the question and four minutes for the answer, reply and rejoinder.
The final part of the debate will be reserved for direct confrontation between the candidates, a traditional model adopted by the broadcaster in the last elections.
In addition to the broadcast on Band, the debate will be shown on a network with TV Cultura, TV Gazeta and Jovem Pan. The content will also be available live on YouTube.
The coverage will also feature a Digital Room developed in partnership with Google. The tool should monitor, in real time, audience indicators, search trends and other data related to the impact of the debate on digital platforms.
Traditionally, the first presidential debate is seen by campaigns as one of the main milestones in the beginning of the national dispute. In addition to offering the first opportunity for direct confrontation between the candidates, the event tends to influence the communication strategies adopted by campaigns in the following weeks, especially among candidates seeking to increase visibility or reduce the distance in relation to the poll leaders.
