Sony announced on Wednesday that it will stop producing physical discs for all new games released for PlayStation consoles from January 2028, marking a complete transition to digital distribution as consumption continues to migrate online.
According to the company, digital downloads accounted for about 80% of Sony’s full game sales in fiscal 2025, reflecting a long-term trend toward digital purchases.
The Japanese technology and entertainment company reported that new PlayStation titles released from January 2028 onwards will be sold through the PlayStation Store and retailers in digital formats only.

The change will not apply to games that have already been released or are scheduled for release on disc before that date.
Separately, Sony said it will begin disabling the PlayStation Store on older devices such as the PS3 and PS Vita, initially in select markets later this year, with global expansion in 2027.
According to the company, these consoles, which are between 15 and 20 years old, are no longer compatible with the secure payment systems used by the current PlayStation Network.
After stores close, users will no longer be able to purchase new content, although previously purchased games and items will continue to be available for download for a limited time.
The PS3 store will be closed in Mexico, Honduras and Nicaragua starting in August, with other markets in Latin America and the Middle East being affected later this year. The PS3 and PS Vita stores will close in other markets in July 2027.
