Archaeologists found rare historical artifacts during the construction works of the Residence park, in Macapá, In Amapá. The discovery revealed traces of ancestral peoples and aroused the interest of the scientific community for the study of materials.

During the works, historical artifacts were found that indicate the presence of ancestral peoples in the region. During investigations, they were discovered rarities, such as Coins and pipes, which date from a period prior to 1750, before the first occupations recognized in the history of Amapá.

“They are very significant findings that refer to, in this first moment to the period of implementation of the village of São de Macapá, in 1750, however, there is evidence of an Amerindian occupation in the research area, such as the former Amerindian Cemetery excavated in 1947, during construction of the residence of the governor. Evidence of practices and customs were found, such as fragments of pipes that Amerindians used for the use of tobacco and other substances that were part of their daily lives, ”says the archaeologist, professor and historian of the Unifap History Collegiate, Edinaldo, Edinal Nunes Filho.

A team of archaeologists is conducting analyzes to determine the age of artifacts and their importance to local history. Amid archaeological excavations, discoveries shed light on the history of human occupation in the region.

Revealing indications point to an intense activity dating from the 17th and 18th centuries, confirming the contact between different cultures and the development of local commerce, as explained by archaeologist Kleber Souza, coordinator of the studies.

“In this preliminary phase we find a collection, especially the evidence of human occupation of the eighteenth century and one of the evidence is the 1775 coins, pocket coin, Dutch pipes, raw materials, often found and attest to commercial contact in that period . Within this context, we also find iron artifacts, indigenous ceramics that reinforce the event of this contact. We also find European dishes, all within evidence of a component of occupation related to the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, ”said the archaeologist and coordinator of the studies.
