Prime Minister Luís Montenegro
Trust motion will advance with the votes against the PS, arrives and left block. If the government falls, the door is open to elections: as in 2023, Marcelo gets the knife and cheese in hand.
The prime minister assured this Wednesday that he will present the confidence motion already suggested in recent days by the PSD. The announcement made in Parliament comes from the discussion of the censorship motion proposed by the PCP (the second this month), as a result of the case of the Prime Minister’s family company, Spinumviva.
“We are not available to be in atmosphere of permanent insinuations and intrigues which only have one purpose: the degradation of political and governance life with the claim of taking partisan or even individual dividends for the concrete situation of those responsible for opposition parties, ”said Luís Montenegro.
“Therefore, it is not clear as it results from the interventions of the largest opposition parties, which Parliament gives all the conditions to the government to execute its program, we will move on to the last opportunity to do it that is the approval of a vote of confidence,” he added.
Montenegro guarantees that “the country needs political clarification, and this is the moment.”
However, it continues to deny any illegality: “It is not because they are often repeated incorrections, errors and falsehoods that things come to have the contours they want to assign. I didn’t accumulate anything. I have not received a cent to anyone since I was elected PSD president, ”said the prime minister.
Will there be elections?
The prime minister also said that early elections “are not desirable, but they are” a necessary evil. “
However, Pedro Nuno Santos has already announced that the PS will spill the motion as soon as it is presented. According to the Portuguese Constitution, a motion of trust is approved through a simple majority. If approved, the government reinforces its position and continues in. But if the government falls.
Thus explains to the constitutionalist Jorge Pereira da Silva. “When deputies are called to vote will have to express whether they trust the government or not, if there is a majority in the sense of rejection, it will determine the fall of the government,” he says.
If the government falls, “the President of the Republic is once again placed before the traditional dilemma that is, or dissolves the Assembly of the Republic and calls elections or tries a new government in the same parliamentary framework.”
If there is, therefore, a lead of the motion of trust, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, who will speak to the country at 6:30 pm, is the one who chooses if there will be elections – that was his decision in 2023.
Of the 12 motions of trust (counting on this) presented in the country’s history, so far only one has been spoiled – that of Mario Soares in 1977, which resulted in the fall of the government.
Now, “the way is not linear, but everything points to early elections,” says the constitutionalist.
Will the parties spoke the motion of trust?
O PS expressed in this regard, and Mariana Mortágua, from Left blockhas also assured that it will vote against.
Rui Tavares, from Booksays the motion is “a mere formality.” “Why isn’t it dismissed now? Stop lasting, let the country do, ”he said.
O He arrives It has also rejected any scenario other than the elections. With André Ventura, the prime minister had an exchange of “barbs” who ended up with Montenegro nicknamed the party leader of “André Cata-Veto Ventura”, after throwing him: “By fleeing it is generating a political crisis.”
