Former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) is counting on Congress to approve the amnesty bill that could reverse his ineligibility conviction and pave the way for him to compete in the 2026 presidential election. He sees the Legislative power as more important than the Executive – referring to the Presidency of the Republic – and the Judiciary.
The possibility of reversing ineligibility gained strength after Republican Donald Trump’s victory in the United States presidential election. For him, this strengthens the right around the world.
“Congress can. Congress is the way to do almost everything. The most important branch is the Legislature. Then, the Executive… Congress is the most important branch. Nobody voted for Supreme Court personnel,” he said in an interview with the newspaper The Globe published on Thursday (7).
According to him, the Judiciary only exists to “resolve conflicts”, and that it is the target of “a person’s desire to arrange a coup and convict”. The person would be Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), rapporteur of most of the inquiries in which Bolsonaro is cited.
“I have never seen an unarmed strike. There is a desire on the part of a person to arrange a coup and convict. This has already gotten ugly. It’s a jewel, it’s a vaccine, it’s a whale, it’s condensed milk, it’s a coin in the Alvorada water mirror”, he said.
Still according to the former president, a coup would occur in circumstances of violence with the use of weapons, and not as occurred in the acts of January 8, 2023. “The coup is when I enter your room, I kill you, I arrest you or I’ll send you out of the country”, he pointed out.
Bolsonaro states that the invasion of the headquarters of the Three Powers that day “by all indications, was built by the left”. “I wasn’t here on January 8th. I was away”, he recalled.
“My concern is who will judge me. The arrest of a former president has repercussions around the world. Jair Bolsonaro arrested. Arrested for what? Obviously there has to be a just cause. The law has to be applied”, he pointed out.
He further added that “Congress amnestied people who bombed the barracks, people who killed people, kidnapped people, people who killed international authorities, bank robbers. Everyone was amnesty there.”
