The executive secretary of the Ministry of Transport, George Santoro, stated in an interview with CNN Money that the government aims to more than double the kilometers of highways granted to the private sector in the country. The speech took place during Morning Call, a morning program that precedes the opening of the Brazilian market.

“Our goal is to go from 14 thousand kms to more than 30 thousand kms granted by 2026. A granted highway has a higher level of quality and safety than those managed by the government, because it has more resources available and more agility for maintenance”, said the secretary.

By 2026, the government wants to have 49 new road concession contracts: the goal is to hold 35 auctions and optimize another 14 agreements. According to number 2 of Transport, this scenario would mean between R$280 billion and R$290 billion in investments in Brazilian roads.

Still this year, four competitions are planned to be held: Rota da Celulose (BR-262/267/MS and MS-040/338/395), Rota Verde (BR-060/452/GO), in addition to lots 3 and 6 of the concessions in Paraná. All auctions take place in December and bring together more than R$30 billion in investments.

George said he expects the Rota Verde auction to be the most competitive of the year, considering that eight groups are considering making a bid for the asset. The highway is an essential route for the flow of agricultural products and manufactured goods.
