SÃO PAULO, SP (FOLHAPRESS) – Donald Trump has been re-elected and will be the 47th president of the United States. For the second time in history, an American president will serve again without serving a consecutive term — which is why, according to the White House’s counting rule, he receives different numbers for his Presidency. Born in New York and trained in economics, Trump is a billionaire; He inherited his father’s company, in the real estate and construction sector, and produced and participated in television programs.

Before Trump, only Democrat Grover Cleveland had been president on two non-consecutive occasions — from 1885 to 1889 and from 1893 to 1897. In the 1888 election, he lost to Benjamin Harrison and in the following election he defeated him. Now, Trump will be remembered as the 45th and 47th president — like Cleveland, the 22nd and 24th.

Elected in 2016, his term was marked by controversial policies and speeches regarding civil rights, immigration, international trade, climate policies and diplomacy. In 2020, he lost the race to the current Democratic president, Joe Biden.

US presidents have been affiliated with the Democratic or Republican parties since 1853 — with the brief exception of the period from 1864 to 1868, when Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson formed a bipartisan alliance called the National Union Party, which did not move forward.

Since the 1787 Constitution came into force — two years later, in 1789 —, eight American presidents have not ended their term due to death while in office. Four of them — William Harrison, Zachary Taylor, Warren Harding and Franklin Roosevelt — died of disease or natural causes. Four others — Abraham Lincoln, James Garfield, William McKinley, John Kennedy — were assassinated.
