Corinthians missed the chance to advance to the Copa Sudamericana final for the first time. This Thursday (31), the Parque São Jorge team ended up being defeated by Racing, in Argentina, 2-1, and said goodbye to the competition in the semi-final stage.
In the first game, in São Paulo, there was a 2-2 draw. At the time, the black and white team had gone behind on the scoreboard, turned around, but conceded the draw.
Racing will now face Cruzeiro in the decision, on November 23, in Paraguay.
For the Parque São Jorge club, the elimination will have another bad consequence, as the continental tournament was the last chance the team had to get a place in the 2025 Copa do Brasil — to do so, they needed to keep the title.
Now, all that remains for Ramón Díaz’s team is the fight against relegation in the Brazilian Championship. The team is currently in 15th position, with 35 points, just one more than Red Bull Bragantino, the first team in the red part of the table.
Next Monday (4), the black and white team will have the Derby with Palmeiras, at the Neo Química Arena, for the 32nd round, still hungover from the defeat to Racing.
In Argentina, it was Corinthians who opened the scoring, with Yuri Alberto, after just six minutes, when he received a backheel pass from Memphis Depay. At 22, Rodrigo Garro had a chance to increase, but, alone and facing the goal, he finished over the goalkeeper.
Still in the initial stage, Racing turned around. Quintero scored twice, in just over a few minutes, at 36 and 39. In the first, he converted a penalty. In the second, he found the Corinthians defense unarmed after the Argentine team quickly took a throw-in.
After the break, Corinthians were unable to repeat the same momentum and organization they had until conceding the first goal.
Closed in defense, Racing, in addition to exploiting counterattacks, made the so-called catimba from the first minute of the final stage, without any refereeing action to curb the Argentines’ attitude.
With substitutions that had no effect, coach Ramón Diáz did little to improve the offensive production of his team, which abused balls thrown into the area, taken advantage of by goalkeeper Arias to hold the match until the Argentines celebrated.
