Civil Defense issues warning of rain, hail and strong winds in SP

The Civil Defense of São Paulo issued a alert for risk of heavy rain, possible hail and gusts of wind between this Monday (2) and Tuesday (3).

According to the agency, the phenomena are influenced by the passage of a meteorological system close to the territory of São Paulo. Damage can occur in isolated points in different regions of the state.

The heaviest rain is expected to occur on Tuesdaywith greater concentration in the west of the state, a region close to on the border with Paraná.

Meteorological models indicate significant accumulations of rain, which vary depending on the region. See below:

  • Very high: Vale do Ribeira and Itapeva Region;
  • Alto: Sorocaba and Bauru regions;
  • Average: Metropolitan Region of the Capital of São Paulo, Baixada Santista, North Coast, Serra da Mantiqueira and regions of Campinas, Presidente Prudente, Araraquara, São José do Rio Preto, Araçatuba, Ribeirão Preto, Barretos, Franca and the region of Marília.

The agency also informed that the CGE (Emergency Monitoring Center) will be on duty 24 hours during alert days. In addition, the Crisis Office will be available remotely. However, if the occurrences worsen, the model must switch to face-to-face mode.

Care in risk situations

Still in the alert, Civil Defense asks the population to avoid areas subject to flooding and floods, not to cross flooded roads and seek shelter in a safe place during storms. The agency also highlights that it is important to keep away from trees, poles and metal structures.

Furthermore, it advises the population to be alert to signs of landslides, such as cracks in the ground, in the walls of properties and tilting of trees or poles.

According to the Fire Department, between 1pm and 5:46pm, 45 calls for falling trees, 9 calls for floods and 4 calls for landslides were recorded in the capital and metropolitan region. To date, no victims have been reported during the incidents.

In the capital, the Climate Emergency Management Center (CGE) placed all regions in a state of alert for flooding, around 12:50 pm this Sunday (1st).

The sub-prefectures of Itaim Paulista, Guaianazes, Vila Prudente, Itaquera and Campo Limpo went into a state of alert for imminent overflow.

According to CGE, winds of 70 km/h hit the Congonhas Airport region. In a statement, Enel stated that the storm that hit the concession areas caused interruptions in the power supply in some points. Around 90 thousand customers were impacted. The most affected regions were the south zone of the city of São Paulo and the municipalities of Cotia, São Lourenço da Serra and São Caetano do Sul.
