Brazilian Real Madrid striker Vinicius Junior said on Monday (29) that he will continue to fight against racism, even if his activism was the reason he did not win the Ballon d’Or, sources close to the player told Reuters.
Vinicius took to social media after finishing second in voting for the prestigious award, behind Manchester City’s Spanish midfielder Rodri.
“I will do this ten times if I have to. They are not ready,” Vinicius posted on X after his LaLiga team Real Madrid canceled their plans to attend the ceremony in Paris, boycotting it in anticipation of the Brazilian not win the men’s prize.
Asked what Vinicius meant with his post, his management team said he was referring to his fight against racism and that they believe this was what led to him not winning the award, saying the world of football is not ready to accept a player who fights the system.
To discuss how the Vinicius Junior case sheds light on racism in football, presenter Priscila Camazano welcomed sports journalist and researcher Júlia Belas Trindade, on Como É que É? this Friday (1st).
