He was elected vice-governor of Renan Filho in both 2014 and 2018. The crisis between them, however, reached its peak in 2020. Barbosa had decided to run for Mayor of Arapiraca after internal raids. The MDB state directory, chaired by Renan Calheiros, asked for the candidacy to be rejected and was successful —Barbosa was expelled from the party days before for “disobedience”.
Winner of the election with 55% of the votes, but without a party and with , the mayor of Arapiraca awaited a decision from the TRE-AL (Regional Electoral Court of Alagoas), which approved his candidacy in December of that year.
