Trump told Putin not to escalate war in Ukraine, source says; Kremlin denies

The President-elect of the United States, Donald Trumpspoke with the Russian president, Vladimir Putinand advised him not to escalate the war in Ukraine, a source familiar with the conversation said, but the Kremlin denied that the two spoke.

The source told Reuters on Sunday (10) that Trump, who has criticized the scale of US military and financial support for Kiev and said he will end the war quickly, spoke with Putin in recent days.

O Washington Post was the first to report that the call had taken place, citing unnamed sources, and said that Trump told Putin that he should not escalate the war in Ukraine.

But in an unusual move, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Monday (11) that no such call took place.

“This is completely false. This is pure fiction, it’s just false information,” he told reporters. “There was no conversation.”

“This is the most obvious example of the quality of information that is being published now, sometimes even in reputable outlets,” he said.

Asked whether Putin had plans for any contacts with Trump, Peskov said: “There are no concrete plans yet.”

Trump spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy last Wednesday.

Asked about the alleged call between Trump and Putin, Steven Cheung, Trump’s communications director, said: “We do not comment on private calls between President Trump and other world leaders.”

Republican Trump will take office on January 20, after winning the November 5 presidential election. Biden invited Trump to meet in the Oval Office on Wednesday, the White House said.
