The Prime Minister announced this Monday the launch, in the first quarter of next year, of a “great language model” in Portuguese (LLM), which he considered “a critical step” for teaching, public administration or companies.
Luis Montenegro spoke at the opening of , considered one of the biggest technological ‘summits’, which began in Lisbon, in which, after a few brief words of greeting in English, he spoke in Portuguese.
“I am speaking Portuguese so I can say here and now, first hand, that in the first quarter of 2025 we will launch a Portuguese LLM – Large Language Model – to innovate in Portuguese, preserving our language and using our culture in the service of innovation”, he announced.
An LLM is a type of artificial intelligence (AI) program that can recognize and generate text, among other tasks.
The head of Government considered that this tool will be “a critical step” which will allow us to provide new answers in several areas.
“Inclusive responses: giving each student an artificial intelligence educational tutor tailored to our curricula to help them understand the world. Giving every citizen the access to public administration services in a simpler, more direct and personalized way to respond to your needs”, he said.
On the other hand, he argued, this will allow “to give each enterprise the opportunity to design your services in an era of artificial intelligence also in Portuguese”.
“Let’s do it! Let’s do this! Keep up the great work and enjoy Portugal! (Continue the good work and enjoy Portugal)”, he appealed.
In Portuguese, Luís Montenegro took advantage of the big stage to emphasize measures from his Government: “We are reducing taxes for people and companies, we declare war on bureaucracy, we want to attract and retain talent”.
Carlos Moedas was also on the first day of the Web Summit. The mayor of Lisbon highlighted the “14 unicorn companies” based in the capital: “They are here because we believe, because we had the audacity to convince them to open an office. Some started with 10 people, and now they have 300.”
