Delegate Cristiano Santana, superintendent of the Civil Police in João Pessoa, confirmed to CNN this Tuesday (12) that the substance present in the cake ingested by seven people from the same family who fell ill in Paraíba was clonazepam.
The case, registered in the Ilha do Bispo neighborhood on October 3, took a 10-year-old child, two 70-year-olds and four other adults to the Emergency and Trauma Hospital after they all showed symptoms of intense drowsiness.
According to investigations, the cake was provided to one of the victims, who took it home and shared it with his grandparents, brothers and cousins.
The delegate explained that, after expert confirmation of clonazepam – an anxiolytic medication popularly known as Rivotril – in the food, the police are working to understand the circumstances of the contamination.
Also according to the superintendent of the Civil Police in João Pessoa, Cristiano Santana, the suspect has already been identified.
“Other reports will be incorporated into the police investigation so that all circumstances are clarified and the criminal liability of the person being investigated is defined,” stated the delegate. According to the police, the new expert reports may also clarify the motivation behind the use of anxiolytics in the cake recipe.
According to the Trauma Hospital, the victims were admitted between 11pm and 1am, in October, transported by SAMU ambulances. All seven people underwent emergency care and were discharged after observation.
