Detainee who escaped after freeing himself from handcuffs in the PSP van in Lisbon is captured in the Algarve

The Republican National Guard (GNR) captured in Lagoa, in the Algarve, the Algerian citizen who, on Tuesday, escaped from a Public Security Police (PSP) cell van outside the Lisbon Court of Appeal, after letting go of the handcuffs. The Algerian, who fled for a day, was captured this Wednesday by the GNR, around 300 kilometers from the place where he fled from the PSP, on Tuesday morning. The Judiciary Police (PJ) confirmed this information to .

When contacted by , the GNR only informed that it has an “individual in custody” and that several “inspections” are taking place, with further clarifications to be provided later.

The individual was spotted by a member of the public in Estômbar, who alerted the GNR at around 9:40 am. Shortly afterwards, he was approached and taken for identification at the local police station, where it was found that he was without documents. The physical similarities with the images of the fugitive published by the press caught the attention of the authorities.

The escape occurred on Tuesday, around 10:20 am. The detainee, an Algerian national, had been captured on Sunday at Lisbon Airport, with a “European arrest warrant” for arson.

Yesterday, Tuesday, the PSP announced the opening of an internal investigation to investigate the circumstances of the escape, which occurred upon arrival at the Court of Appeal, where the individual would be “presented to the judicial authority”.

In a statement, cited by Notícias ao Minuto, the PSP explained that, when “opening the door of the police vehicle transporting detainees”, the agents were “surprised” by the escape of the detainee, who managed to “free himself from the handcuffs of one of the wrists” as he fled. Since then, several efforts have been underway to locate the man.
