German chancellor Olaf Scholz plans to address the members of the Bundestag on Wednesday.
A week ago, the liberal FDP left the three-way government coalition (SPD, Greens and FDP). TASR informs about it based on the report of the DPA agency.
Scholz’s speech in parliament, which will start at 1 p.m., is considered the start of the election campaign of his center-left Social Democrats (SPD). Early parliamentary elections are expected in Germany, probably on February 23, their original date was in September.
Friedrich Merz of the conservative bloc (CDU), who is interested in becoming the next chancellor, is expected to react to Scholz’s speech. The current prime minister’s fractious coalition fell apart last week when the chancellor fired Finance Minister Christian Lindner from the liberal FDP, which subsequently left the coalition. Scholz lost his majority in the Bundestag, and the government therefore faces a vote of confidence next month. According to the DPA, it will definitely not win the parliamentary composition, and Germany is therefore expecting early elections in February.
Apparently, the German cabinet will meet on Wednesday for the first time since the collapse of the previous coalition. After the departure of the FDP, only the ministers of Scholz’s SPD and the Greens and the independent Minister of Transport, who left his parent FDP, remain in the cabinet.
