The physical trainer who was fired from Flamengo after punching striker Pedro during Argentine coach Jorge Sampaoli’s time with the Rio team, will return to working in football. Pablo Fernández will once again assist Sampaoli. This time, however, the destination will be Rennes, from France.
The physical trainer’s last job was at the Gávea club. Previously, Pablo Fernández had already had problems at Olympique de Marseille in 2021, when he attacked a Nice fan who had invaded the field. At the time, the professional was suspended from any professional activity until the end of the season by the French Football League (LFP).

The attack against the Flamengo player occurred last year, after the end of the match against Atlético-MG. During an argument between the two, the physical trainer accused the athlete for refusing to continue warming up after strikers Everton Cebolinha and Luiz Araújo were chosen to enter the game. The red-and-black number nine retorted to the Argentine and complained about the treatment received by the technical committee, which led to the aggression.
After the episode, Pedro filed a complaint with the Rotam Battalion (Metropolitan Tactical Rounds of the Military Police), the police subdivision responsible for match security, and opened a police report against Pablo Fernández. Flamengo removed the physical trainer and later confirmed his dismissal.
“I could be here talking about the few minutes I received in recent games, but what happened today was more serious than what can happen on the pitch. Cowardly, for no reason and inexplicably, I was attacked, with a punch to the face, by Pablo Fernandez , member of Sampaoli’s technical committee”, wrote the player on social media.
“Physical cowardice took precedence over the psychological cowardice that I have suffered in recent weeks. Someone who thinks they have the right to attack others does not deserve respect from anyone. I have been through many trials here at Flamengo, but nothing compares to the cowardice suffered today,” he added.
