Car color, an often overlooked factor, can have a significant impact on road safety after all. This is the conclusion of a study carried out by carVertical, a company specializing in automotive data, which identified the colors of cars with the highest and lowest probability of being involved in accidents on Brazilian roads.
Green, silver and white: the safest colors
According to data collected between August 2023 and August 2024, green cars stood out as the safest in Portugal, with only 37.9% of verified vehicles showing damage records. According to experts, this shade can contribute to greater visibility in different lighting conditions, thus becoming a safe option for drivers.
Silver/gray and white colors occupy the second and third position on the list of safest. Silver cars, with a damage rate of 42.9%, are easier to identify on the road due to their neutral tones, which contrast well with different types of pavement. White vehicles, with a 45% incidence of damage, stand out for their high visibility and reflective properties, characteristics valued especially in sunny climates, such as Portugal.
The most dangerous colors: brown and blue
On the opposite side of the table, the carVertical study identified brown as the most dangerous color, with a staggering 61.9% damage rate. This high percentage may be due to the tendency of earthy tones to blend into the natural landscape, such as forests or dirt roads, which reduces their visibility. Right after brown, blue vehicles record a damage rate of 53.1%. Despite being eye-catching, blue cars can blend into the environment, especially on cloudy days or in regions close to the sea, making detection difficult for other drivers.
Matas Buzelis, specialist and Communications Director at , reinforces the idea that choosing a car’s color should be considered carefully: “The appearance of a car can be deceiving, so we don’t recommend choosing a model just based on its appearance. appearance. It is important to check the vehicle’s history, take it for a test drive, have it inspected by an authorized workshop and only then decide whether to buy it or continue with the search.”
Check history and ensure security
When purchasing a used car, many owners resort to personalization techniques, such as painting or applying vinyl covers. However, carVertical warns of the need to check the original color registered in the car’s documents, as changes may hide damage to the bodywork or rust problems.
The study, conducted in 15 countries, reflects findings from millions of historical vehicle reports processed by carVertical. The company, which operates in 28 countries and collects data from more than 900 databases, including law enforcement and state registries, offers detailed, up-to-date analysis of trends and safety in the used car market.
Therefore, for those who want to increase traffic safety, green appears as the most recommended color for a car, while brown and blue may require extra care in certain driving conditions.
