Eight people were killed and 17 others injured in a stabbing attack on a university campus in the eastern Chinese city of Yixing on Saturday, according to police.
“At around 6:30 pm on November 16, 2024, a stabbing incident occurred that resulted in casualties at the Wuxi Vocational Institute of Arts and Technology in Yixing City, causing 8 deaths and 17 injuries. The suspect was detained at the scene,” according to a police statement.
According to the statement, the suspect was a student and was motivated by “having failed an exam, not having received a graduation certificate and being dissatisfied with the internship remuneration”. An investigation is taking place.
The attack is the latest mass casualty incident to hit China.
Last Monday, 35 people died after a car hit pedestrians exercising in the southern Chinese city of Zhuhai, injuring more than 40 people. As news of the attack spread, censors moved into action to take down videos of the attack and moderate discussions on social media.
In October, police arrested a 50-year-old man after a stabbing attack near a primary school in Beijing injured five people, including three children.
In September, three people were killed and 15 others injured in a knife attack at a supermarket in the Shanghai suburbs.
Also in September, a bus crashed into a crowd of students and parents outside a school in the city of Tai’an, in Shandong province, killing 11 people and injuring 13 others. Chinese authorities have not revealed whether it was an accident or a deliberate act.
